GuestbookOur trip to Sunset Waters was the perfect retreat for honeymooners that met on a dive trip to Cozumel! We wanted somewhere different (i.e. not Mexico) that was all inclusive, with a casual atmosphere and great diving. Sunset Waters delivered. The hotel accommodations aren't glamorous but are clean and comfortable. Our deluxe room with king bed had a fantastic view of the ocean. The manager greeted us on arrival and escorted us to our room. Champagne arrived shortly afterwards, a nice touch! The hotel staff are accommodating, friendly and eager to help. The food was excellent, with a variety of selections at every meal. Service is a little slow (just leave the pitcher of water on the table, please! It's HOT in Curacao), but this is probably just a function of island time. If you are looking to dive, this is the place. The on-site dive shop, Sunset Divers, is top notch, with daily boat trips and the option of nitrox. Kurt, one of the divemasters with the operation, was fantastic, showing us some great sites. Make sure you dive Mushroom Forest, Blue Cave, and Cas Abao. You know it's a good dive when you get to swim with a pod of wild dolphin! If you don't want to go on the boat, the house reef just off the resort beach offers lots of sealife too, octopus, spotted drum, eels, puffer fish.Have fun! My wife and I spent a week here and had a great time. This place is a fantastic place for diving and I highly recommend it for dive couples and groups. The manger Jim Hunter meets you at the hotel when you arrive and really seems to care about his guests. There are many positive things about this resort. The staff was very friendly and really seemed happy going about their jobs. The location is one of the best in the carribean (and we've been to a bunch of places). The beach and lagoon are quite nice. The house reef is excellent for shore diving and some divers spent an entire week just diving this reef. Unlike most carribean resorts, the snorkeling is very good with a large variety of species, some fairly large fish, especially parrot fishes, and some good coral and sponges. The resort is located at the mouth of a large bay that offers great sea kayaking. If you are comfortable in a boat certainly check out one of their kayaks and do a tour of the bay. From the bay, Mt Kistofel is visible in the distance and makes a beautiful backdrop for photos. There is also a family of pink flamingos that live at the back of the bay, bunches of other birds as well. Let the guy at the beach know where you are going and when you plan on returning, (you can't get lost). A full tour takes about 2-3 hours of pretty steady paddling. The first time I went out they thought I had drowned. The dive shop Sunset Divers is onsite and operates two boats. Their big boat is a nice stable and roomy converted cabin cruiser that is very beamy and with 8 divers we could spread out. During our stay the maximum # of divers was 8 with an average of 6-7 divers. Dive sites were relatively close by (15-20 minutes) and they did two morning dives and an afternoon dive. Night dives on request. Diving is easy with very little current and healthy reefs, lots of soft corals, and little critters. There are few really big fish and we saw no plelagics. We enjoyed all the divemasters. All in all, Sunset Waters is definitely worth visiting if you are after a relaxing beach vacation, again the location is prime. As a dive destination it is very good and I have recommended it to my local shop as a group destination. This review is the subjective opinion of a TripAdvisor member and not of TripAdvisor, Inc. I just returned from a stay at Sunset Waters and I have to agree with many of the other reviewers. Sunset Waters is a great place to stay if you are looking for peace and quiet in a lovely and remote setting. The staff was very welcoming and accommodating. They genuinely seemed to care if we were enjoying our stay. Kenny the bartender makes great drinks and be sure to ask for the "Kenny Special." The food was amazing and I gained a few pounds during the week. When there was something I wanted and it wasn't on the menu, Camille asked the chef to make it special and there was no problem! This was also done for some other people who had special requests. Since we were there during a low time we had many things to ourselves and we were sometimes the only people in the pool, which was fine with us. The snorkeling was great and there was always equipment available from the friendly staff. Rudi was a great person to show us around the island. The other guests at the hotel were amazingly friendly and we often sat around after dinner and had a great time talking until late in the night. I have to agree with other raters that the views from the room were great, but the rooms themselves were just ok. The room was clean but the bathrooms definitely need a make over and we sometimes had a few ants. If you are looking for a Marriott - this is not it. I know some other guests at the hotel were a little disappointed because they were looking for something a little more "posh." If you are looking fo a quiet place to get away from it all I would definitely recommend this resort. I would love to go back again. My husband and I stayed at Sunset Waters from June 22-29. This was our second trip to Curacao, but on our previous trip we had stayed at another hotel. We were delighted with our overall experience at Sunset Waters and would stay there again. The staff are very friendly, courteous, and helpful. Our large room had a balcony overlooking the beach and was kept very, very clean. Satellite TV and a small refrigerator were also a bonus for us, and the bed was very comfortable. The all inclusive meals provided us with choices. The manager was also on-site during different times of the day and was always asking guests for their feedback. It was also fun for us when Curacao residents came to the resort for a Friday-Sunday holiday. Getting to know these wonderful people was very enjoyable. The resort had entertainment with local bands, singers, and dancers. We really loved the diving operation and staff. They always put us in calm water to enter and exit the boat even when the rides, sometimes, were somewhat choppy. When the wind died down some, it was perfect. The reefs which are very close are prolific with a variety of coral and sponges. We went home relaxed and smiling. We now look at our photos of lovely Curacao and video of underwater Curacao and fondly think of returning to Sunset Waters. I stayed at Sunset Waters from April 20-28 and was pleasantly suprised with what I found. To appreciate my enjoyment of Curacao and Sunset Waters, it will help to know what kind of person I am and what kind of things appeal to me on a vacation. I enjoy scuba diving and traveling in the Islands. I don't like crowds or tourist traps. I hate traffic. I want to feel like I'm at home away from home. I don't like 5 star mega resorts. I like to dress casual. I like to relax without getting bothered by somebody. I like a hotel with a clean room, A/C, hot water, a comfortable bed, a bar, a beach, a resturant and water I can drink. I like to wander around, hang out with the locals, meet friendly people and make new friends. All of the staff, including the Management were EXTREMELY FRIENDLY and accomodating; they went out of their way to make sure I had an enjoyable stay. The staff could speak many languages, including English and Spanish, so communication was not a problem. The Mangement (husband & wife) team, regularly checked to make sure I was having a good time and if there was anything I needed; they even came outside to greet me when I first arrived at the Resort (you won't find that many places). The food was great and the menu was rotated, as was the location of dinner, they also had live musical entertainment some nights and a DJ. If you're looking for a 5 star mega resort with tons of excitement, you won't find it here, but if you want to relax and unwind, without tons of children and tourists running everywhere, this is definitely the place to go. The climate on Curacao is arid and the sun is strong, so make sure you have sunscreen on when you're out in the sun; I kept myself hydrated and shaded by spending a lot of time at the swim-up pool bar. If you enjoy diving or snorkeling, this is definitely the place to go. The shore diving on the house reef is excellent and other dive sites are a short boat trip away. They have a dive shop at the Resort which makes it very convenient. The resort is isolated and away from the other hotels and tourist areas, but they have a shuttle that will take you into town for shopping, casinos, etc. I recommend going into town just to see the beautiful/colorful historic architecture (this is a UNESCO World Heritage Site) and if you're up to it, get your picture taken with some Iguanas from 'The Iguana Man'. If you're tired of relaxing and want to kick up the action a notch or two, take trip to Mambo Beach and dance the night away. If you are a Man searching for a more hedonistic adventure, ask about the 'Campo'. I stayed at the Resort during the crossover between High and Low season, so I saw both sides of the occupancy scale; at the busiest time, I didn't feel crowded or neglected and once most of the guests had left, I felt like I was the King of my own Island. I can honestly say that I will return and I am recommending Sunset Waters to all my friends. « Previous Page 1 2 3 4 5 6 Next Page » |
