Curacao - Safe below the belt

Hurricane Data

Curacao is tucked below the hurricane belt in the south Caribbean and has a very low incidence of severe storms. According to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) there is only a two percent chance of facing a serious storm when visiting Curacao during hurricane season. The Dow Jones Island Index says that Curacao is "ranked best among Caribbean islands in our index" for safety from storms and hurricanes.

This is thought to be because Curacao is located close to the equator where the necessary wind conditions for hurricanes are rare to occur. As well, most of the major storm systems, which originate in the eastern Atlantic about 10 degrees north of the equator, travel northwest and usually hit even further north by the time they reach the Caribbean Sea.
